This past Memorial Day weekend was good to San Felipe. Town was busy, restaurants did good business and the hotels were close to full capacity. This is our premiere beach holiday with the 83 degree water and intense sunshine giving the whole family a treat.
Day camping on the beach
There were people camping on the Malecon and the beaches north and south of town had a bumper crop of quads and trucks. All the visitors I spoke to were having a wonderful time. They consistently praised San Felipe as being a great place for a family vacation without all of the regulations and rules associated with any similar beach venue in the USA. If there was any grumbling, it was about the prices being charged along the Malecon for relatively “vanilla” food; two bucks for a fish taco.
Prices in general have risen quite sharply in the past few months. Part of this has to do with the feeling that the worst of the recession is now behind us and there is growing optimism that the visitors are returning to Mexico. Everywhere there is a feeling that a new broom will sweep clean after the upcoming elections. New construction is starting up in town and buildings that have stood half-finished for several years are now showing evidence of coming back to life.
A typical Calimax market in Mexicali
A very strong vote of confidence is being demonstrated by the Calimax grocery chain that has started construction of a small supermarket on Chetumal, just north of the Glorietta. The Calimax chain consists of around 100 stores in northern Baja and is associated with Smart and Final in the USA. They generally stock a good supply of US goods and that should appeal to the expat community here. They pride themselves on having the freshest fruit, vegetables and best cuts of meat. Expect to see them offer American-type weekly promotions, issue club cards and take plastic. I think that this is going to be a wake-up call to our existing markets in San Felipe.
Home Depot and Walmart are other chains that will be looking hard at San Felipe if growth does, indeed, take off again.
Memorial Day weekend has certainly brought the crowds out to San Felipe. Driving the Malecon Saturday night found businesses full and parking spots sparse. Lots of people enjoying the San Felipe cuisine and having fun on the beach. And last night’s temperatures were amazing for San Felipe in May, brushing the 60s. No need for air conditioning yesterday! Today is slightly warmer, and we will be back in the 100s by Tuesday. It’s currently 79.0 °F out there.

Road conditions for the Memorial Day weekend are looking fairly decent for visitors traveling down. While construction is ongoing in Mexicali, it is not as extensive right now and you can navigate it fairly smoothly by following the traffic through the detours. To avoid the downtown construction altogether, there is also the option to simply take the new (East) border crossing. Once past the city, you will be able to enjoy the fresh highway, brand-new from the past ongoing construction. While there are crews toiling by the side of the road midway through the journey, detours do not begin until you are nearing La Ventana.
Drive with care and take your time.
There are 5 detours, each fairly long, some crossing over the highway to follow the best path. They are currently in fairly good condition, without any major ruts, though there are some rocks in the road, if you drive at a safe speed and keep an eye out for them, you should be able to avoid them with no trouble. The detours stretch over a distance of about 20-25 miles. Drive cautiously through the construction zones.
Detours in the La Ventana Area
Do keep track of your travel schedule and don’t drive after dark. With the long days of summer, sundown is at 7:34.
Once past these detours, it is smooth sailing into San Felipe, so take your time, be aware and enjoy the magnificent Baja desert and mountain scenery, and get ready to relax in San Felipe with a plate of fish tacos and some cold ones!
The Memorial Day weekend’s temperatures are set to be in the 80-90s; you can’t ask for a better time for a Sunny San Felipe vacation! Also in May 26th the Laguna Percebu Poker Run, fun times in the South! is taking place. Banana boats, seadoos, sailing or fishing? Dive into our Things To Do section and get ahead in your plans.
