A delicious celebration…

The past weekend’s 10th Annual San Felipe Paella Festival was a delicious celebration, packed with happy event-goers, sampling the mouth-watering paella dishes with a side of spicy mariachi music and beautiful Baja weather. The clouds stayed home, but the crowds came out, as this was reported to be the best, busiest Paella Festival yet. Many different varieties of the dish were available to try, as well as the famous huge pan of paella, cooked by the hosts of the event, the El Cortez Hotel. More Photos

Also over the weekend was San Felipe’s Caminata Contra El Cancer; this year a tide of blue shirts crested the hill, marching down Chetumal to raise over $3,000 for the detection and treatment of cancer in San Felipe. Photos Here

San Felipe Carnaval 2012 has been a success!

San Felipe Carnaval 2012 has been a success! Despite relocating to in front of the Government Center on Ave. Mar de Cortez this year due to Malecon construction, the Carnival was a hit, and large crowds attended.

The festival was based around a Jungle theme this year, with zebra and leopard prints galore, wild animal costumes and floats draped in vines and foliage. Food stands were arranged along the back of Ave. Mar de Cortez, tempting the crowds with hot churros and gorditas, while music and dancing swirled around the main stage while carnival rides whirled behind the government offices.

As well, there was a strong presence by the Policia, keeping the crowds in order, making way for the parade floats, as well as strongly discouraging littering, making sure everybody was having a safe, fun time.

Missing the Carnival already, or didn't get to make it down and experience it? Check out the photos of the Carnaval in our Gallery!

Here's hoping you made it down for the fun, or if not can make it next year!

Día de la Constitución

In 1909, Emiliano Zapata became the leader of the farmers from his village to protect their farms.  Zapata and his men fought the government troops in the south of Mexico.

In 1913, Pancho Villa formed an army of several hundred farmers in the north. They fought on the side of Venustiano Carranza and the Constitutionalists.

Eventually Carranza rose to the presidency and created the Constitution of 1917, which still is in effect today.  This resulted in the ejido or farm cooperative program that redistributed much of the country’s land from the wealthy land holders to the peasants.  The ejidos are still in place today and comprise of nearly half of all farmland in Mexico.

San Felipe’s 87th Birthday.

Happy 87th Anniversary to San Felipe! Our little spot in the Baja where there are "No Bad Days" officially became a town on February 5th, 1925! San Felipe has come a long way…from a tiny Baja fishing village with a population of only 100 people in the late 1920's, to the beautiful place that so many people now consider themselves very lucky to call home!

¡Feliz Cumpleaños San Felipe!
