February in San Felipe

The Lunar Eclipse
The last week in January and first week in February is a time of the astronomical high tides in San Felipe. The sun, moon and earth all line up in the early morning hours of Wednesday 31st of January to produce the maximum gravitational force on the seas of our planet to give very high and very low tides. In addition, the earth will cast its shadow on the moon to cause a total lunar eclipse between 4:51 am and 6:07 am Pacific Standard Time as shown in the NASA diagram below. Wherever you are, you will be able to see this eclipse (convert the PST figures to your local time zone) as long as it is dark in your region. We will have several days of very low tides in the afternoons to give us wide, sandy, walking beaches here.
Hot Sauces for Chilly Nights
February is a month where we can have beautiful sunny days with temperatures hitting 80 degrees (27 C) at times, but we also get some very chilly nights (40 F or 4 C) where a hot, spicy, meal in a local restaurant can be a lifesaver. Many visitors say that there is nothing to buy in San Felipe except T-shirts, but what they need to do is shop around in some of the food stores and hardware shops to discover  unique products not easily available to them back home. A walk down the aisles of our local Calimax supermarket, for example, will reveal rows of unusual grocery products. I always make a point of buying a few bottles of the spicy condiments to try on friends back in California. Look at this array of bottles:
Any budding chef would appreciate a selection of peppery sauces for their kitchen – and they don’t need refrigeration!
Carnaval, Mardi Gras and St. Valentine’s Day
The build-up to the Easter season in Mexico starts with the Carnaval parades of 9-13 February, a very festive time in which many of our retirees and ex-pats get involved. Volunteers are always needed to help out with the floats and logistics and things going wrong adds to the local flavor and spontaneity of the events. Check in with the Tourism office in the Chapala Hotel if you want to make contact and help out.
Get a Workout
There are several good gyms in San Felipe and you can buy a monthly membership or just have a single visit for a few dollars to help eliminate those kilograms that you put on at Christmas.

Heavenly Events…

A series of passes of the International Space Station over San Felipe will occur between 11- 13 February just after sunset. This is a wonderful sight to see if you have never observed a big satellite go overhead. We have clear and dark skies for you astronomy buffs. Bring your smartphones and download a good sky-view app to follow the action in the heavens. Jim (of pizzamanagement.com) reminds me that these satellites disappear very quickly after a few margaritas!!)
